BNP Organising Secretary Fazlul Haque Milon and another leader, Nazimuddin Ahmed, have been arrested. The two were picked up from a house in Dhaka’s Baridhara around 3.30pm on Tuesday.
An hour earlier, the police had arrested BNP Chairperson’s Advisor and Bar Council Vice Chairman Khandker Mahbub Hossain the moment he emerged from an event at the National Press Club.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Deputy Commissioner (media) Masudur Rahman confirmed the arrests.Khandker Mahbub attended an event organised by a pro-BNP professionals’ body. Members of the detective police whisked him away in a car as soon as he came out.
Detectives later raided a business office of Opposition Chief Whip Zainal Abdin Farroque. Milon and Nazim were arrested from there. Farroque was present at his office at the time of the raid and the arrests.
BNP leaders ABM Ashrafuddin Nizan and Lion Harunur Rashid were on the building’s third floor at that time, BNP leader Shirin Sultana told journalists.
She said, “Police first took all of us to the ground floor and picked us up in the car. Then again dropped us from the car and took us upstairs.
“Then keeping the two (Milon and Nazim), they told us, you are not needed’.” The two were taken to the DB office, Shirin said.
Police officer Masud said Khandker Mahbub had been arrested for making ‘provocative’ statements a public meeting on Dec 28 ahead of the Opposition’s proposed march to Dhaka and rally.
Opposition activists unleashed violence over the next two days following his remarks. Masud, however, did not say whether any case was filed against Mahbub or the ground for Milon and Nazim’s arrest. – bdnews24.com
