Dhaka – Charging the current regime with indulging in a cruel game of oppression, opposition BNP on Thursday alleged that the government is
harassing, repressing and arresting opposition leaders and activists in the name of a drive by joint forces only to frustrate the
18-party’s ongoing movement.
In a statement, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, said, “The government has indulged in a cruel game of
oppressing and arresting the opposition leaders and activists and implicating them in false charges by joint forces across the country.”
The BNP leader threatened that people will give the government a befitting reply by creating a mass movement if it does not stop
repressive acts.
“Stop immediately the arrest of opposition leaders and activists and repression on them by joint forces all over the country. Come to the
path of compromise accepting people’s demand,” he urged the government.
The BNP acting secretary general also called upon the government to pursue the path of peace for saving the country from violence and
anarchy. “Or else, people will get united and force you (govt) to accept the mass demand.”
Fakhrul also alleged that the government is making every frantic effort to foil or block the peaceful ‘March for Democracy’ programme
sensing its success.
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia at a press conference on Tuesday announced ‘March for Democracy’ and urged people from all walks of life to march
towards Dhaka carrying the national flag on Sunday to press home their demands for having an election under non-party neutral administration.
Fakhrul alleged that the government got crazy after the announcement of the peaceful programme and is arresting and harassing the
opposition leaders and activists across the country by the joint forces. – UNB
