JP demands Biman MD’s arrest on gold smuggling charge

Jatiya Party on Thursday demanded of the government to arrest chairman of Biman Bangladesh Airlines Air Marshal (Retd) Jamal Uddin Ahmed and 42 other officials for allegedly being engaged in gold smuggling.
Jatiya Party lawmaker Kazi Feroz Rashid last night made the demand while addressing the House on point of order.
Independent lawmaker Hazi Selim also demanded the government to take necessary measures so that the Biman officials arrested by police for their alleged involvement in gold smuggling cannot get escape through the loopholes of law.Earlier a Deputy General Manager of Biman Bangladesh Airlines is among five people arrested for their suspected involvement in gold smuggling.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (North) Sheikh Najmul Alam said they were picked up from different parts of the capital late Tuesday night.
Those arrested include Biman DGM Emdad Hossain, Flight Captain Shahidullah, Schedule in-charge Tozzamel Haque, owner of Uttara’s Farhan Money Exchange Harun-ur-Rashid and Biman contractor Mahmudul Haque Palash.
The demands of the two lawmakers came a day after the much-talked about arrest of a number of Biman officials for their alleged involvement in frequent gold smuggling through the airport.
The lawmakers demanded exemplary punishment of those involved in gold smuggling.
Kazi Feroz said it is very shameful for the nation that a section of Biman officials are involved in gold smuggling using the national flag carrier airliner.
He alleged a son of Biman Board Chairman Jamal Uddin, is the mastermind of the gold smuggling.
“He is the husband of an air hostess, not any official of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, but allegedly manages the time schedule of Biman airlines and the duty of cabin crew,” he said.
Feroz questioned the source of power of Biman chairman and said why no action was being taken against him.
The JP lawmaker also demanded the concerned parliamentary standing committee to summon him to quiz about Biman officials involvement in gold smuggling. -Staff Reporter
