AL activist killed in Mymensingh intra-party clash

A local Awami League activist was killed and 15 others were injured in a fierce clash between two groups of the party in Nandail upazila on Thursday night. The victim was identified as Abul Mansur, 55.
Police and locals said the clash broke out following an altercation between the supporters of incumbent MP Anwarul Abedin Tuhin and ex-MP Major General (retd) Abdus Salam when a brick chip was thrown at a conference organised by pourasava unit of Awami League in front of the Sub-register’s office around 7:30pm.At one stage, both groups, equipped with homemade arms, attacked each other, leaving 16 people, including Mansur, injured.
Mansur, a supporter of Salam group, was taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries around 9pm.  The rest of the injured were admitted to local hospital.
Officer-in-charge of Nandail Police Station Saiful Islam said police fired several rubber bullets and teargas shells to bring the situation under control.
Meanwhile, the local administration imposed section 144 in the area for an indefinite period to fend off further trouble. – UNB
