JS body asks DU deptt to study forced marriage

Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs yesterday entrusted a department of Dhaka University with the responsibility to carry out institutional and standard research on forced marriage, age of marriage and the right to pregnancy.
A decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of the committee held at Sangsad Bhaban with its chairman Rebeka Momin in the chair.
According to the decision, the Women and Gender Studies Department of Dhaka University will conduct the research on the issue through a reputed Research Institution.Associate Professor Dr Syed Shaikh Imtiaz will oversee the activities of the research cell which would collect necessary information from each district throughout the country, meeting sources said.
The meeting also endorsed some resolutions including formation of a research cell for women development and creation of new jobs for rural womenfolk.
The meeting also decided to set up a stall with the goods of “Joyeta’Anneshan” in the upcoming International Trade Fair 2015 in the capital.
The other resolutions include the involvement of all representatives of Union Parishad under the ongoing Training Development Package of VGD (vulnerable group development) Circle of 2015-2016.
Committee members—State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroj, Sirajul Akbar, Mahbub Ara Begum Ghini, Nasrin Jahan Ratna, Monwara Begum and Fazilatunnesa attended the meeting. Staff Reporter
