JS to thank its Speaker for election as CPA chair

The Parliament which sits for its fourth session Thursday may adopt a thanks giving motion for Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury for being elected as chairperson of the executive committee of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.
Ruling party whip Atikur Rahman Atik said he expects that such motion could be taken during the session. Earlier a senior JS official said adoption of a thanksgiving motion is likely.A total of 10 bills have so far been submitted to the law section of Bangladesh Parliament Secretariat for consideration during the Fourth Session of Jatiya Sangsad beginning Thursday.
Two new bills among those are—Bangladesh Oceanographic Research Institute Bill-2014 and Power and Speedy Supply of Power and Energy (Special Provision) (Amendment) Act-2014.
A bill titled Bangladesh Power and Energy Research Council (BPERC) remains pending before the House while seven other bills are being scrutinised by concerned standing committees.
The fourth session which will be brief one will begin at 4:00pm with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.
A meeting of Business Advisory Committee of Parliament will be held at 3:00pm to decide on transaction of business and tenure of the session.
Parliament Secretariat sources said the session would be brief one since it has been conveyed to meet the constitutional obligation to call Parliament’s session within 60 days after proroguing a session.
“The session is likely to continue for about two weeks,” said a senior official of Parliament Secretariat.  The previous session was prorogued on September 18.
A number of questions and notices have also been deposited before the concerned section of the House.
The 10th Parliament started functioning on January 29 following the January 5 generation election that was boycotted by the BNP-led political alliance.
The Speaker yesterday returned home after visiting the CPA headquarters in London and Geneva to participate an international convention organized by World Health Organization. – Staff Reporter
