Responding to the call of President Abdul Hamid, the agitating
teachers of Jahangirnagar University (JU) withdrew their movement on
Friday.
“We’ve unconditionally called off our demonstrations showing respects
to the Chancellor,” Prof Kamrul Ahsan, member secretary of JU
Teachers, Students, Officers and Workers Unity Forum, said at a press
conference on the campus.
Earlier, Abdul Hamid, also the Chancellor of JU, asked the agitating
teachers to unconditionally withdraw their ongoing movement to restore
academic atmosphere at the university.
He also asked JU Vice-chancellor Prof Anwar Hossain to take necessary
steps to immediately hold the Senate polls in the build-up the VC
panel election.
Since April 27, the members of JU Teachers’ Association (JUTA) have
been on a movement demanding the resignation of Prof Anwar Hossain for
his reluctance to punish JU unit Bangladesh Chhatra League secretary
Rajib Ahmed Russell who physically assaulted a teacher.
After a High Court order on May 24, JUTA backtracked, but later they
resumed agitation under a new banner, Sadharan Shikkhak Forum.
No Syndicate, Senate, Academic Council and other important meetings
were held in the last six months due to the teachers’ agitation.
The agitating teachers went on an all-out strike on the campus on
November 2 and staged sit-in in front of the VC’s residence every day
since then.
On Wednesday, a new platform was formed comprising teachers, officers
and employees of Jahangirnagar University (JU) to strengthen the
ongoing movement demanding the removal of the VC.
Addressing the press conference, Prof Kamrul, however, threatened to
resume their movement if the VC dilly-dallies with the Senate election
for holding VC panel polls. – UNB
