Jute harvest nearing completion in south western region

Harvest of jute in 10 districts of Khulna division during the current season is nearing
completion.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said farmers of the southwestern
districts cultivated jute on 2,03,063 hectares this year with a target of producing 23.39
lakh bales of the cash crop.
The districts are Jessore, Narail, Jhenidah, Magura, Khustia, Chuadanga, Meherpur,
Satkhira, Khulna and Bagerhat.
Farmers are expecting a bumper production of jute this year thanks to a proper
monitoring by the authorities concerned.
While visiting some areas of Jessore, Magura and Narail districts, BSS correspondent
found that cutting of 90 percent jute from the field has almost been completed.
DAE officials of the region have also expressed the hope of achieving a bumper
production due to favourable climatic conditions.
Officials of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) particularly sub-assistant
agriculture officers at the field level motivated the farmers to cultivate jute on a large
scale to meet its demand in Khulna and Faridpur regions.
Deputy Director of Narail DAE Chabi Hari Das told BSS that necessary steps were taken
to ensure supply of adequate quantity of improved quality seeds, fertilisers, insecticides
and other agricultural inputs among the growers at fair prices to boost the production. –
