Khaleda denounces arrest, demands release

Terming Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman a strong voice against the government’s anti-people policy and repressive acts, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Thursday expressed deep concern over his arrest.In a statement, Khaleda, also the leader of the opposition in parliament, denounced the arrest and demanded immediate release of the Amar Desh acting editor.
She also urged the government to ensure the freedom of expression, which is the main spirit of the country’s great independence, stop the repression and oppression on the media.
“The government’s Baksal character has been exposed with the arrest of Mahmudur Rahman,” the former premier said.
She alleged that the government, since assumption of office, has been stampeding people’s basic rights, freedom of press and journalists and the voice of its opponents.
Mentioning that peoples’ pent-up anger caused by the government’s misdeeds over its four-and-a-half-years rule is emitting like the eruption of volcano, the BNP chief said the government has been hatching various plots to suppress peoples’ anger. “But people can’t be confused with conspiracies.”
She alleged that the government has resorted to a violent path of abduction, forced-disappearance and secret killing to perpetuate its misrule by annihilating the opposition.
Police arrested Mahmudur Rahman from his Karwanbazar office in the morning on charge of sedition.
Later, a Dhaka court placed Mahmudur Rahman on a 13-day remand.
Earlier, he had to suffer jail for seven months for defaming the court.
An engineer by profession, Mahmudur Rahman was energy affairs adviser to Khaleda during her last tenure. UNB
