Dhaka – Awami League general secretary and road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader yesterday said BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia has been disrupting the judiciary’s works by taking time again and again from the court.“It is not true that the court is harassing her [Khaleda], rather she is harassing the court by taking time again and again in the name of her illness and disrupting judiciary works,” he said this while addressing an extended meeting of Dhaka City North Awami League in the city.
Earlier, on Thursday, Khaleda during the hearing on her graft cases claimed that allegations of misappropriation of money in the cases were false and intended to harass her.
The AL general secretary alleged that BNP shows dual position about the court. They call the Judiciary independent if the verdict goes to their favour. But when the verdict goes against them, they accuse it of influencing the Judges.
“Does the deferment of court’s hearings (Khaleda’s cases) about 150 times would prove BNP’s faith in the honourable court?” he asked.
About the scuffling of Khaleda’s lawyers in the court premises on Thursday, Quader said Thursday’s incident of BNP lawyers proved that they are not respectful to the law. He also raised the question that what will happen if the party goes to power.
Referring to the electoral talks with the Election Commission (EC), Quader said, “Awami League didn’t oppose the polls-time army deployment. We urged the election commission to take all necessary steps in line with the country’s existing law to ensure a fair election.”
The AL general secretary also inaugurated his party’s membership collection drive in the city (north) and called upon the party leaders and workers to remain alert so that anti-liberation forces can trespass the party.
He also said the main target of the party’s membership drive is to attract young and women voters of the country. However, the ruling AL started the membership drive campaign from May 20, this year. – Staff Reporter
