BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia could not go to Central Shaheed Minar in time to pay her respects in the first hour of Amar Ekushey due to police ‘obstruction’, the BNP complained.
However, she left for Shaheed Minar after 12:30am along with senior BNP leaders and around 1am and paid her tribute to the Language Movement martyrs at the Shaheed Minar.
Her Press Secretary Maruf Kamal Khan told journalists Friday Khaleda had prepared to leave for the Shaheed Minar, but could not go out because of heavy police presence in front of her Gulshan residence. After a while, she left for her office in the same area around 12:10am where security was ratcheted up too.
Khan said Khaleda was inside her office with the party senior leaders at that time. Later, she left for Shaheed Minar.
After her party boycotted the Jan 5 parliamentary election, this is the first time Khaleda, without her government protocol, paid her tributes alongside general people.
Bangladeshis are paying rich tributes to the martyrs of the 1952 Language Movement.
Tens of thousands of people from across the broad spectrum of society gathered at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka on the wee hours of Friday to pay their respects. – bdnews24.com
