A local leader of Krishak League was chopped to death by miscreants in Monirampur upazila on Thursday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Shafi Kamal, 50, cooperatives secretary of district unit of the ruling Awami League’s farmer wing and a resident of Garibpur village in the upazila.
Witnesses said Shafi Kamal, also former president of upazila unit of Krishak League, went to Chandpur area along with some ruling party men to paste election posters of the party candidate in the 10th parliamentary polls slated for January 5.
At one stage, the miscreants swopped on them. The attackers hacked the Krishak League leader indiscriminately with sharp weapons, leaving him injured.
He was rushed to Monirampur Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.
On information, police recovered the body. They also arrested Omar Faruk, general secretary of upazila Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, suspecting his involvement in the killing.
Additional members of Border Guard Bangladesh and Rapid Action Battalion have been deployed in the area alongside police.
