Latham helps NZ beat India by 6 wickets; Kohli hits 31st ton

Mumbai,(AP/UNB) – Tom Latham scored his fourth ODI hundred as New Zealand pulled off a stunning six-wicket win against India with an over remaining in the first one-day international on Sunday.Latham hit an undefeated 103 off 102 balls and added 200 runs with Ross Taylor (95) for the fourth wicket. New Zealand ended on 284-4 in 49 overs in the highest chase in ODI cricket by any team at this ground in Mumbai as the tourists took the lead in the three-match series.Chasing 281, Martin Guptill (32) and Colin Munro (28) provided a solid start, adding 48 runs for the first wicket. Jasprit Bumrah (1-56) provided the breakthrough as Munro mis-hit to cover and was caught.Earlier, Virat Kohli scored his 31st hundred as India reached 280-8 in 50 overs.Playing in his 200th ODI, he scored 121 runs (125 balls) as the India innings revolved around him thanks to a disciplined bowling effort from the Black Caps.Tim Southee (3-73) and Trent Boult (4-35) shared seven wickets, while Mitchell Santner (1-41) limited the hosts’ scoring after India won the toss and opted to bat.Boult struck quick double blows early on and dismissed both openers Shikhar Dhawan (9) and Rohit Sharma (20), reducing India to 29-2.Kohli then put on 42 runs with Kedar Jadhav (12) for the third wicket. Santner had an opportunity to further punish the hosts when he dropped Kohli off Colin de Grandhomme (0-27) in the 19th over when he was on 22.Jadhav was out against the run of play shortly afterwards, with Santner making up for the lost chance and accepting a simple return catch. India crossed 100 in the 22nd over.Kohli added 73 runs with Dinesh Karthik (37) for the fourth wicket. The skipper reached his half-century off 62 balls.India kept losing wickets at regular intervals as Karthik holed out to long leg off Southee. It brought Kohli together with MS Dhoni (25) and the duo added 57 runs for the fifth wicket. The total crossed 200 in the 41st over.Boult returned to account for both Dhoni and Hardik Pandya (16) as India was reduced to 238-6 in the 46th over.However, Kohli held one end together until close to the finish. He reached his century off 111 balls, a knock that included seven fours and a six.His ton moved Kohli past Australia’s Ricky Ponting, who scored 30 ODI hundreds in his career.
