Lawyers’ rally in SC premises, Khaleda’s 3rd in 8-days, obstructed

The scheduled rally of nationalist lawyers in the Supreme Court premises was obstructed by police on Saturday morning. Police prevented lawyers coming from different parts of the country from entering the SC compound, and also broke the podium of the proposed rally which was to be addressed by BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.
The rally was organized by the pro-BNP Nationalist Lawyers forum to protest the abduction-murder of Narayanganj lawyer Advocate Chandan Sarkar along with six others including a panel Mayor of the N’ganj City Corporation. The bodies of the abduction victims were later found floating in the Sitalakhya river.

Yesterday’s rally was the second consecutive meeting, that Begum Khaleda Zia was scheduled to address, foiled by the police. Earlier on Thursday a meeting organiased by the BNP to protest abductions and killings all over the country, at the Institution of Engineers auditorium was foiled on the ground, police said, that there was no permission granted for the same.
After the N’ganj abduction murders the BNP had announced a protest rally in Narayanganj city on May 17, but permission for the same was refused by the Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy, an Awami League leader, on the ground that this would deteriorate law and order. Later BNP called a meeting in Demra area on the same day, but law enforcing agencies refused permission of the meeting. – Staff Reporter
