Lawyers’ role vital in preventing domestic violence: Speakers

Speakers at a views-sharing meeting have said the lawyers can play important role in preventing domestic violence, empowering the women and bringing a change in the social mindset towards the womenfolk.
Rangpur unit of ‘Pollisree’, an NGO, arranged the meeting for the practicing lawyers on ‘Prevention of Domestic Violence and Women Empowerment’ at Rangpur Ainjibi Bhaban in the city on Tuesday afternoon.The NGO organised the meeting under its ongoing ‘Social Intervention: Women Empowerment and Leadership Project’ with the financial support of Oxfam Novib.With Manager of ‘Pollisree’ Suraiya Begum in the chair, General Secretary of Rangpur Ainjibi Samity and noted lawyer Advocate Alef Uddin Sarker attended and addressed the meeting as the chief guest.Human rights and environmental activist Advocate AAM Munir Chowdhury, Advocate Sufia Khatun, Advocate Samsia Begum, Advocate Shahina Begum, Advocate Ruhul Amin Talukder, addressed the meeting.Sadar Upazila Field Trainers of ‘Pollisree’ Rokonuzzaman Badal and Selima Haider also spoke on the occasion.The speakers elaborately discussed the Domestic Violence (Prevention & Security) Act 2010 and stressed for combined efforts of all stakeholders in the society, including lawyers, to eradicate domestic violence through economic empowerment of women.Narrating present scenario of domestic violence against women, they urged all to work unitedly with holistic approach to eradicate such violence once for all as the women are being subjected to violence
everywhere including families for lack of awareness.They put emphasis on involving all stakeholders, including professionals, for ending domestic violence through social awareness building activities, sincere efforts and showing cooperative attitude among the family members in this respect.
Terming domestic abuse and torture as main barrier for women leadership and their empowerment, they also suggested incorporation of the concept of gender equality in the curriculum to help the students developing hatred against these evils.The chief guest asked the lawyers for playing their due role in preventing violence against women for building a more civilized society through ensuring equal women rights and their enhanced emancipations in the nation-building activities. -BSS, Rangpur
