Legendary Olympic weightlifting champion Yury Vlasov dies

Moscow, February 13 (TASS/UNB)— Yury Vlasov, a gold medalist of the 1960 Olympic Games, has died aged 85, Secretary General of the Russian Weightlifting Federation Alexander Kishkin told TASS on Saturday.” This tragic event happened today. The Russian Weightlifting Federation offers our deepest condolences to the family,” he said.
Vlasov won silver at the 1964 Olympics and captured six European championships and four world championships. He broke 34 world records in the super-heavyweight class.
Vlasov was the flag bearer leading the Soviet Union’s delegation at the Olympic Games in 1964. After retiring from the sport, Vlasov became a professional writer and journalist. In 1985-1987, he was president of the Weightlifting Federation of the Soviet Union. In 1996, Vlasov ran in the Russian presidential campaign.
