Lightning strikes kill 5 in Satkhira

Dhaka, June 28 (UNB) – At least six people, including three members of a family, were killed by lightning strikes in Kaliganj and Ashashuni upazilas of Satkhira and Sadar upazila of Magura on Friday.

In Kaliganj upazila of Satkhira, a thunderbolt struck three members of a family when they were sitting in the courtyard of their house at Garaimahal village around 10am, said Rajib Hasan, officer-in-charge of Kaliganj Police Station.

The deceased were identified as Alamin Hossain, 22, his wife Sabina Khatun, 18, his brother Rabiul Islam, 20.

Besides, Mansur Ali Gazi, 50, son of Hatim Ali of Bijoynagar village, was killed after being struck by lightning while he was working in a water body at the village, said police.

In Ashashuni upazila, Jewel Sardar, 25, son of Kabir Sardar of Madra village, was killed by lightning when he was returning home from a fish enclosure in the morning, said Abdus Salam, officer-in-charge of Ashashuni Police Station.

Meanwhile, in Muchiamora village of Magura Sadar upazila, farmer Pankaj Biswash, 35, was killed by lightning strike around 1pm. 

Officer-in-Charge of Magura Police Station Sirajul Islam said Pankaj died on the spot when a thunderbolt struck him as he went to the field to fetch cattle.
