Rifat Murder: 4 suspects released hours after detention

Barishal, June 28 (UNB) – Police on Friday morning released four people, suspected to be involved in the broad daylight killing of Barguna youth Rifat Sharif, a few hours after their detention.

The four had been arrested in a drive from a Dhaka-bound ‘Manami’ launch at Launch Ghat area in the city around 9 pm on Thursday night.

Their identities were not released.

Nurul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kotwali Police Station, said the faces of the four youths do not match the ones shown in the video footage of the incident. “Their involvement in the murder was not found after primary interrogation. So, they were released at 5 am,” the OC said.

At the directives of higher officials concerned, law enforcers kept vigil to obstruct the escape of the suspects involved in the Rifat killing, police said.

On Thursday, three suspects were arrested in connection with the killing Rifat Sharif, a Barguna youth.

Rifat, 22, was hacked to death by some miscreants, including Nayan, Rifat Farazi, Rishan Farazi and Rabbi Akon, in front of his wife in the district town of Barguna on Wednesday.

The entire incident was captured in a surveillance camera. It was seen in the footage that the miscreants were hacking Rifat indiscriminately while his wife Ayesha Siddiqua Minni was trying to resist the attackers.

However, the attackers pushed her aside and continued to chop the youth until he soaked in blood.
