Senior Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor MA Matin has been made the acting Vice-Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University (JU) nine days after Professor Anwar Hossain quit his job.
Prof Matin will hold a special meeting within 30 days and submit to the government a panel of academics who fit the post, the Education Ministry said in a media statement on Wednesday.
VC Prof Anwar Hossain sent his resignation to Chancellor President Abdul Hamid on Jan 13 in the face of a strident agitation by a group of teachers and students.
The JU teachers’ association, general teachers and students, university officers and staff had been pressing for the VC’s removal.
Anwar Hossain was made the Vice-Chancellor on May 17 last year after his predecessor, Prof Sharif Enamul Kabir, resigned after similar demonstrations.
Later, Hossain was appointed the permanent VC through an election.
But university teachers began demanding his resignation for several reasons, forcing the country’s only residential university, at Savar, on capital Dhaka’s outskirts, to stay closed for much of last.-bdnews24.com
