Man held with 3 for allegedly setting wife to brothel

A court here on Thursday sent a man and his three associates to jail in a case filed for selling his wife to a brothel.
The accused are Rana, who sold his wife to a brothel in Daulatdia of Rajbari district, his brothers Ashraful Islam and Abdul Alim, and the brothel’s matron Brishti Akhter.Gazipur Chief Judicial Magistrate Mohammad As-Sams Jaglul Hossain sent the four to jail when police produced them before the court on Thursday noon.
Earlier, police conducted a drive at Rana’s residence in the city in the early hours of Thursday and arrested him along with his two brothers.
On information gleaned from them, police conducted a drive at a brothel in Daulatdia and rescued the victim in the early hours of Thursday. Police also arrested brothel matron Brishti Akhter during the drive.
Victim’s brother-in-law Abdul Baten, who filed a court petition case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act on June 21, said the victim was married off to Rana two and a half years ago.
Since their marriage, Rana had been putting pressure on his wife for dowry.
As his demand was not met, Rana sold his wife to brothel matron Brishti Akhter on June 3 in exchange for Tk 63,000. The heinous act was mediated by a broker named Swapan.
Following the filing of the case, the court ordered the Bureau of Investigation of Gazipur police to investigate the matter.
Bureau inspector Khandker Shawkat Jahan, who is also the investigation officer of the case, said they conducted a drive at the brothel at Daulatdia and rescued the victim.- UNB
