Mahmudur Rahman Manna, the outspoken leader of the Nagorik Oikya has been picked up by some plainclothes people identifying themselves as Detetective Branch Police at about 3 am on Monday night, but Dhaka Metropolitan Police of which DB is a branch has denied they arrested the youthful political leader.
Meher Nigar, wife of Manna has said that her husband was picked up from the Banani house of a relative. The captors said he was being taken to the office of the Detective Branch.A section of newspapers on Monday published transcripts of a bdnews24.com report on alleged mobile phone conversation of an identified person with Mahmudur Rahman Manna. The unidentified person made mention of some retired and serving officials of some services, according to the published transcript report.
Manna was picked up from the house of his niece Shahnama Sharmin of Banani at 3 pm. Sharmin said some plainclothes men identifying g themselves as DB police knocked at their door at the dead of night and picked up her uncle. They were told Manna was being taken to the DB office.
On Tuesday morning Joint Commissioner of DB police and spokesman of the Dhaka Metropolitan police told journalists that they had no information about the picking up of Mahmudur Rahman Manna. He said they were inquiring as to who picked him up.
Meher Nigar has said that she had talks with Mahmudur Rahman Manna at about 12 pm Monday night before the arrest.
SI Jahangir duty officer of Banani Police Station has said to journalists that Manna’s wife Meher Nigar has in the morning informed them of the picking up of Mahmudur Rahman Manna. DB Police however has not intimated anything to them about this, he said.
Leaders of the Nagorik Oikya at a press confrerence at the National Press Club on Tuesday demanded release of their convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna and stoppage of the propaganda against him. Manna was supposed to clarify his position vis a vis the report published in a section of the press about is said telephonic conversation with an unidentified person. Because of the publication of the adverse report Manna refrained from leading a procession that Narorik Oikya brought out on Monday afternoon in Dhaka city. The procession was expected to be led by Gono Forum leader Dr. Kamal Hossain and to be joined by JSD leader ASM Abdur Rob.- News Desk
