Although routine surgeries remain suspended at the operation theatre (OT) of Khulna
Medical College Hospital (KMCH) for the last four months, taking medicines from the
store continues as usual.
There are allegations that these costly medicines are being sold out outside the hospital
without giving those to the poor patients for whom these are meant. This happens
regularly but there is none to look into the irregularity.
Hospital sources said due to an electric short circuit on July 14 midnight, medical
equipment worth crores of taka got damaged.
The damaged pieces of machinery include three anesthesia machines, one diatharma
machine, three sucker machines, three OT ceiling lights and two air conditioners.
But medicines worth more than one lakh taka were taken from the store room on the day
when operation activities were stopped.
Sources said the medicines were taken away from the store by showing indent with the
signatures of the operation theater in-charge, who is a junior consultant (anesthesiology),
and resident medical officer.
Hospital superintendent Dr Paritosh Kumar Kunda, also a junior consultant
(anesthesiology), could not be contacted while an attempt was made to know where the
medicines had gone.
It is learnt, these medicines from the hospital are sold to some doctors, private clinics and
pharmacies at cheap prices.
A source in the hospital said medicines purchased by the government and patients are
being stolen for a long time by those who are related to the OT.
Despite there being adequate supply of government procured medicines and other items
at the hospital, the patients are given lists of medicines to purchase those from outside.
It was found that same person has been doing service at the OT for several years in return
for a huge kickback. -UNB, Khulna
