Dhaka: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday praised Bangladesh’s community-based cyclone preparedness programme as ‘a global best practice’.
“The government of Bangladesh launched a large community-based cyclone preparedness programme. It led to a significant reduction in loss of lives from cyclones,” said Modi adding, “It is now recognized as a global best practice.” UNB News Agency Reported.
The Indian Prime Minister made the remark while speaking at the inaugural session of the Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi on Thursday.
Ministers, officials and environmental activists from more than 60 countries are taking part in the three-day conference, according to a message received here from Bangladesh Mission in New Delhi.
The Bangladesh delegation at the conference is being led by Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya Birbikram MP.
Maya Chowdhury said Bangladesh has an efficient early-warning system and has “established a model example before the world communities in disaster risk management. We are now able to respond quickly by strengthening preparedness mechanisms and creating stock of relief materials at even local level.”
Bangladesh, he said, has constructed 3851 cyclone and 142 flood shelters to save vulnerable people cyclone and flood.
The country has more than 55,000 trained volunteers under Cyclone Preparedness Programme and 32000 volunteers for urban disaster risk management.
The minister said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is determined to build a resilient nation to achieve the goal of ‘No more death in disaster’.
He referred to the creation of the Climate Change Trust Fund and said his ministry has spent installed environment friendly solar panels at a cost of 18 million dollars as part of climate change adaptation measure.
