Mollah issued death warrant: Jamaat calls countrywide hartal

Dhaka – Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Sunday called a countrywide

daylong hartal for Monday protesting what it said the government’s
plan to kill its leader Abdul Quader Mollah for political purpose.
In a statement, Jamaat acting secretary general Shafiqur Rahman
announced the shutdown programme in the evening.
Accusing the government of filing a false case against Jamaat
assistant secretary general Abdul Quader Mollah to kill him, Shafiqur
Rahman said the investigation commission and prosecution formed with
ruling party men prepared fictitious charges and produced fake
witnesses against Quader Mollah.
Criticising the tribunal that dealt with the war crimes case against
Quader Mollah, the Jamaat secretary general said the court sentenced
Mollah to life imprisonment taking into consideration the fictitious
and false deposition of the prosecution witnesses.
Referring to the appeal filed against Mollah’s sentence with the
Supreme Court, Shafiqur Rahman alleged the apex court handed down the
death penalty to Quader Mollah on the basis of deposition given by the
fake witnesses. “The trial process was totally politically-motivated,”
he added.
Earlier in the day, the copy of the full text of Supreme Court verdict
awarding death sentence to Mollah for the crimes against humanity
committed during the 1971 Liberation War reached the International
Crimes Tribunal-2.
Later, the tribunal issued a death warrant for the Mollah. The SC
pronounced the judgment against Mollah overturning the ICT-2’s verdict
in the case. – UNB
