More export needed for making the region’s economy vibrant

Emphasis should be given on promoting more export from the region for making its economy vibrant coupled with elevating its socio-economic condition, speakers at a participatory discussion said here today.They also stressed the need for enhancing export items through establishing agricultural and non-agricultural products in the region by utilizing government initiatives aimed at earning foreign currency.This observations came at a seminar styled “Procedures of Export Business and Export Documentation” held at Regional Office of Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) in Rajshahi city.Under its National Training Programme, the EPB organized the seminar where more than 35 government and non-government officials concerned, exporters, entrepreneurs and others concerned people attended.Commissioner of Rajshahi division Helaluddin Ahmed and President of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Md Muniruzzaman addressed the seminar as chief and special guests respectively with EPB Director Moazzem Hossain in the chair.During keynote presentation, Jakir Hossain, Deputy Director of EPB, narrated the aspects of boosting export volume towards accelerating the country’s economic condition.Highlighting the present export position of agro-products sectors of the country and their global market the speakers asked the bankers to come forward with fund.They also urged the producers of the region to produce more qualitative agro- commodities using the favorable climatic condition to promote export activities.Chief guest Helaluddin Ahmed said the export list should be enriched with the induction of new products because a region like Rajshahi cannot be developed through exporting for a limited number of goods.Therefore, he said, the agricultural and non-agricultural products like silk, readymade garments, handlooms and prawn culture in fresh water, have a great prospect to earn foreign exchange.He underscored the need for setting up small and cottage industries with financial cooperation from different commercial banks.Taking part in the open discussion, the local businessmen and entrepreneurs called for extensive financing and other requisite facilities towards the region’s business sector for promotion of the export sector.They emphasized the need for ensuring a full-length business- friendly climate for successful flourishing of exportable business here.Terming adequate promotion of business as vital means of making the region economically prosperous they said priority should be given on identification of existing problems related to business environment here.Joint Director of Bangladesh Bank Nasimul Ghani, Additional Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension Sazdar Rahman and Woman Entrepreneur Begum Saima Kanij Keya spoke on the occasion. -BSS,Rajshahi
