More land under jute cultivation in Manikganj

The cultivation of jute is going to be ended soon with bringing more area of land under the cultivation in the district during the current season.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said a total of 5,724 hectares of land have been brought under jute cultivation with the production target of 61,317 tonnes during this season.

The farmers cultivated jute on 3,806 hectares of land in all the seven upazilas of the district last year.

Deputy Director of DAE Alimuzzaman Mia said the farmers have been showing more interest in farming jute this season as they got fair price of jute last year. Still the jute is the main cash crop to the farmers of the district.

Most of the farmers are interested to cultivate Tusha variety of jute in their land as its demand and prices in the markets, he said.

DAE provided all necessary inputs including quality seeds, fartilizers and insecticides in proper time to farmers.

Abdur Rahman, one of the jute cultivators of Singair upazila, said cultivation of jute is profitable and its stick is used as fire wood and fencing in the houses in the rural areas and the land of the district is suitable for jute cultivation, reports BSS from Manikganj.
