Moudud names EC a toothless tiger

BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed on Friday branded the Election Commission as a toothless tiger for what he said its failure to take action against the ruling party for violation of the election code of conduct.“People have seen how they (ruling party) forced a candidate, Jahangir Alam, to stay off Gazipur City Corporation polls. But the Election Commission is silent. In fact, the commission is a toothless and clawless tiger,” he told a discussion.
Jatiyatabadi Peshajibi Parishad arranged the discussion, titled ‘Demand for a nonparty caretaker government to oversee national election: Present politics’, at the National Press Club.
Moudud said as the spineless people have been appointed to the country’s constitutional bodies they cannot work independently.
The BNP standing committee member held the government responsible for suspension of trade privileges for Bangladesh by the US as it has failed to take necessary steps to save the RMG sector.
“The suspension of GSP facility by the USA will not only badly affect our economy but also will dent the country’s image in the international arena,” he said.
The US has suspended trade privileges for Bangladesh until it improves workers’ safety conditions in the clothing industry. The move will bring tariffs back on some of Bangladesh’s exports to US markets under the programme known as the Generalised System of Preferences.
He alleged that the Prime Minister used to speaking untruth. “She has made disparaging comments about me. I can also say many things about her. But I don’t want to say anything which will belittle the Prime Minister.”
Mentioning his party-backed candidates’ success in the recent elections to four cities, Moudud said, “People have ventilated their grievances against the government in the four city polls. They’ll also give their verdict against it in the Gazipur election.”
