Muhith blasts BB for ‘seeking IMF help for autonomy’

Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Wednesday blasted the Bangladesh Bank (BB) for what he said seeking IMF help to get more autonomy and accused the central bank of resorting to lies about it.
“They (BB) have said they are not enjoying enough autonomy in exercising their authority. They’re telling lies…” Muhith told reporters after his meeting with the visiting delegation of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).The Finance Minister came up with the harsh remarks as the journalists asked whether there was any discussion at the meeting on the central bank.
Muhith said the central bank has got absolute authority to control and monitor the activities of the banking sector, and mentioned that it can dismiss the board of directors of any private bank.
The Finance Ministry and the central bank have long been at loggerheads over the issue, and it came in the limelight following the recent scams in the banking sector, particularly the Sonali Bank- Hallmark scandal. – UNB
