Prime Minister and Leader of the House Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday told Parliament that the government would be able to announce new pay scale for government employees in the next fiscal.
She said this while replying to a question from treasury bench member Selim Uddin from Sylhet-5 during the PM’s question-answer session.
The Prime Minister said the government expects to get the report of the pay commission headed by former Bangladesh Bank governor Dr M Farashuddin within the next six months. She said the commission formed earlier was supposed to submit its recommendations within six months but it had to begin its work in late due to massive destruction of the BNP-Jamaat alliance.
Hasina however said that the government has introduced 20 percent dearness allowance for civil servants from July 1, 2013 as an interim measure.
She said the commission had held two meetings with the government officers and employees from different classes and leaders of professional groups and collected their opinion.
The commission will prepare its recommendations considering the living cost of a six-member family including parents, she added.
She mentioned that the grand alliance government led by the Awami League had increased the salaries of government officers and employees in 2009.
Replying to a supplementary question from Nazrul Islam, the Leader of the House told Parliament that the government would take tougher action to ensure presence of doctors and government teachers at their
working places in rural areas.
“Those are not interested to stay at their working places in rural areas, they do not need job. Fresh appointments will be made by replacing them from their jobs,” she said.
Replying a question from treasury bench member Shahidul Islam Selim, the Prime Minister said the government has no plan to increase the age-limit for government service freshers.
She claimed that session jam has been reduced and students are passing out timely as the classes and examinations are being held in all educational institutions timely despite some untoward incidents.
“So there is no need to increase the age-limit for entering the government job,” she said.
Replying to another question, she quoted Labour Force Survey saying that the number of above 15-age people in the country is 5.67 crore; of them 26 lakh are unemployed.
She said 3.2 per cent labour force is being increased in the country every year. Responding to a questioner, Sheikh Hasina told the House that the population of Dhaka city is increased by about 60 times during the last 42 years comparing the population of 1972.
She told a questioner that the government is considering upgradation of Dinajpur and Mymensing pourasabhas to city corporation.
