Nation remembers Martyred heroes

The nation is paying homage to the intellectuals who were assassinated by Pakistani occupation forces and their local collaborators in the last days of the 1971 Liberation War.Bangladesh observes December 14 as the Martyred Intellectuals Day in memory of those bright minds that had fallen victims to a brutal military regime staring at defeat.President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina led the nation in paying their respects at the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial at Dhaka’s Mirpur on Sunday morning.Bugles played melancholic tunes when Hamid placed a wreath at the memorial at around 8am, followed by the prime minister.Cabinet members, MPs, the three chiefs of the army, navy and air force, and top leaders of the Awami League-led 14-Party alliance were present.The prime minister arrived at the memorial around 7:55am and exchanged greetings with the freedom fighters and the families of the martyred intellectuals.After paying his respects, the president also exchanged greetings with them before leaving.Later, Awami League President Sheikh Hasina placed wreaths at the memorial for the second time, this time on behalf of the party.
