Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Tuesday told Parliament that no extrajudicial killing is taking place in the country as the government is determined to establish the rule of law.
“No extrajudicial killing takes place in Bangladesh. The present democratic government is determined to protect the basic human rights and establish the rule of law,” he said replying to a tabled question from Workers Party MP Hazera Khatun (Women Seat-39).
The present government in no way supports or promotes extrajudicial killing while it shows a ‘zero tolerance’ stance in case of any deviation from lawful duty and responsibility, the minister said.
In reply to another tabled question from Jatiya Party MP Md Sawkat Chowdhure (Nilphamari-4), he said 504 police members were dismissed or sent on forced retirement as part of the departmental action on different charges.
Besides, major punishment was meted out to 3,600 policemen from different levels while 61,910 received light punishment.
Asaduzzaman also dismissed the allegation of taking bribe and harassing service seekers against police while filing general diaries with the police stations. “It’s not true that the common people need to give bribe while filing general diaries with the police stations. Even, the victims aren’t subjected to harassment in the police stations,” he said.
Responding to a tabled question from Jasod MP Nazmul Haque Prodhan (Panchagarh-1), he said now 1,019 police personnel are working in the UN peacekeeping mission.
The present government has so far sent 3,561 police members to the UN peacekeeping mission during its present tenure, the home minister added.
