Alleging that the government wants to arrange one-sided election, BNP standing committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Saturday said no polls without the main opposition would be allowed in the country. “The government is hatching a conspiracy to hold the national election under its own arrangement to cling to power. However, we want to make it clear that no election will be allowed in the country without a popular party like BNP,” he said. The BNP leader was addressing a discussion titled ‘BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman’s thoughtful future Bangladesh and the new generation’ at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh auditorium in the capital. National Research Foundation organised the programme. Mosharraf said the next general election must be held under a non-party government. He said the government has already realised that they cannot overcome the election if held under a non-party government. “Hence, they’re hatching conspiracies to hold the polls under their own arrangements.” The BNP stalwart urged his party leaders and workers to be united and take preparations for launching a strong movement after Eid-ul-Azha to press for their demand for restoration of the caretaker government system. He said Awami League is afraid of Tarique Rahman as he would lead Bangladesh in making it a happy, prosperous and self-reliant country. “They are carrying out propaganda against him.” Turning to Election Commission, the senior BNP leader said the commission is going to award registration to newly floated political party named BNF, which has no existence, in a bid to annihilate BNP. The function was addressed, among others, by journalist Shafique Rehman, former pro-vice-chancellor of Dhaka University Prof AFM Yusuf Haider, former chairman of the Public Service Commission Prof Zinnatunnesa Tahmina Begum and general secretary of Dhaka University Teachers’ Association Prof Mamun Ahmed with foundation president Barrister Nasir Uddin Asim in the chair. – UNB
