Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has urged everyone to stay alert to prevent “any force” from illegitimately usurping power.
She made the call on Saturday while addressing a discussion organised by the Bangladesh Chhatra League, student front of the Awami League, in front of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi 32.
Mentioning that 19 coup attempts were made after Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was assassinated in August 1975, Hasina said, “Military dictators had snatched the people’s voting and Constitutional rights after grabbing power illegally.”
“Without adhering Constitutional process, economic emancipation will not come and democracy will not be protected.
“The State will be ruled as per the Constitution. We must ensure that the country is never ruled unconstitutionally in future. The Constitutional Amendment has also been made to prevent the country form being ruled illegally,” said the Prime Minister.
The Prime Minister also discussed the amendment process. “The special parliamentary committee on the amendment was formed with representatives from all political parties. But only BNP did not send any representative.”
However the main opposition had representatives in the parliamentary standing committee on law ministry. The amendment bill was approved by that committee, she said, asking, “Why are they questioning [the process] now?”
“People of Bangladesh are the owners of the votes. They will elect their representatives. No one will have any influence in the matter. Democracy won’t be ensured without the constitutional process.”
Hasina also portrayed the development carried out by the incumbent government. “The country moves backward whenever BNP is in power, but when Awami League comes to power the country sees developments.”
“[We] implemented many projects. Some are being implemented. We will be able to ensure a hunger and poverty-free Bangladesh if we come to power in the next term.” – bdnews24.com
