North South pupils go wild as Bashundhara guards assault fellow

Dhaka – Students of the North South University (NSU) at last withdrew its demonstration after getting assurance that the perpetrators who assaulted one of its fellow students would be brought to justice.University sources said the security guards of Bashundhara Group assaulted a BBA student on Wednesday, which sparked the demonstration by the fellow students who protested the assault incident and demanded punishment of the perpetrators.
Meanwhile, the NSU authority suspended all classes and exams on Thursday and Friday and the next schedule would be announced later.
A notice of the NSU said an emergency meeting was held among NSU authority, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Bashundhara Group and Student Representatives at the Proctor’s Office and several demands of NSU students were accepted by Bashundhara Group.
The demands were appropriate actions will be taken against the accused Bashundhara security guards by Bashundhara Group and DMP, full compensation (medical and property) will be provided to the victim by Bashundhara Group, Bashundhara Security guards will be properly informed about treating the students with due respect and the entrance to Bashundhara R/A with vehicles near Apollo Hospital will remain open until 8.00 PM from now on and will be extended until 10.00 PM later.
As per the Officer-in-charge of Bhatara Thana, students who were caught by the police were released afterward. So there should not be any confusion or propaganda from other sources, the NSU Authority said.
NSU Sources said that Shahriar Hasnat Tapu, a BBA sixth semester student, who was assaulted by guards on Wednesday night, is now out of danger as the doctor has released him from Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Fellow students said the incident took place when Tapu and another student got involved in an argument with the Bashundhara security guards over parking a motorcycle at the Apollo Gate, an entrance to the residential area, around 10pm.
At one stage of the altercation, the guards attacked the Tapu who received severe injuries. He was rushed to the Apollo Hospitals and later he was referred to the DMCH.
Following the assault, the general students took to the street on Wednesday night and they again staged the protest at 8am blocking the Pragati Sarani around 10:30am on Thursday and continued it till 1pm defying the police order to withdraw it.
Halting traffic, hundreds of agitating students wielding banners and chanting slogans demanded punishment and compensation of the fellow student.
Assistant Commissioner (Gulshan Zone) Rafiqul Islam said the NSU students staged a demonstration in front of Bashundhara Housing Project on Kuril Bishwaroad at 10:30.
Later, they entered the housing project around 11:30am and started to vandalise several infrastructures, he added.
On information, police rushed to the spot and lobbed tear gas canisters to disperse the students. However, the students claimed that they staged the protest in a peaceful manner.
The NSU authorities sources said they hope the student would get justice and such incident would not be repeated in future. – Staff Reorter
