OC among 13 hurt during hartal in Laxmipur, 8 in C’nawabganj

At least 13 people, including seven policemen, were injured in a clash between Shibir activists and police in the district town during an
eight-hour hartal called by Islami Chhatra Shibir. Witnesses said a group of Shibir activists brought out a procession from Alia Madrasah in the morning.
When the procession reached Temohoni of the town, police obstructed them, triggering a clash.
Shibir activists pelted police with brick chips, leaving seven policemen, including Laxmipur Sadar thana officer-in-charge Altaf
Hoosain, injured.
Later, police fired several rounds of rubber bullet and tear shells that left six Shibir men injured.
Police then fired blank shots to bring the situation under control.
Earlier, Shibir activists vandalised a covered van in the district town and torched a truck in Bagbari area.
Islami Chhatra Shibir called the shutdown protesting the arrest of Fakhruddin Manik, former central president of the organisation, and
Atiqur Rahman, office secretary.
In ChapaiNawabganj at least eight people, including three policemen, were injured in a clash between activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir and police and BGB members during a half-day hartal called by the BNP-led 18-party alliance in the district town on Sunday.
Sources said a group of Shibir activists brought out a procession in Shibtala area of the town at about 6.00am.
When the Shibir activists along with the procession reached PTI Road, police and BGB members obstructed them.
The Shibir activists blasted 13 crude bombs at that time and hurled brick chips, injuring three law enforcers.
Later, the law enforcers fired several rounds of rubber bullet and lobbed teargas canisters, leaving five Shibir men injured.
A chase and counter chase took place during the melee.
Police detained three people from the spot.
Bashir Ahmed, superintendent of police of Chapainawabganj, said police fired 55 rounds of rubber bullet to bring the situation under control.
The 18-party enforced the shutdown in the district protesting the arrest of Shibganj upazila parishad chairman and district unit Jamaat
nayeb-e-ameer Keramat Ali.
A police team arrested Keramat Ali from his house in Shibganj upazila on Saturday afternoon.
