Oikya Front memo to EC for reelection, Writ in HC likely

Dr Kamal may file a writ with HC challenging election
Dhaka, Dec 31 – Jatiya Oikya Front will submit a memorandum to the Election Commission demanding reelection under a nonparty caretaker government cancelling Sunday’s general election.“Oikyafront along with its candidates will submit a memorandum to the Election Commission and announce programmes demanding reelection cancelling Sunday’s election,” alliance chief Dr Kamal Hossain said while talking to reporters in front of his Motijheel chamber after a meeting of its leaders.
“Rejecting the so-called results with hatred considering the overall situation, Oikyafront is demanding reelection under a nonparty caretaker government,” he said.
Asked when they may submit the memorandum to the EC, Dr Kamal said they will do it within a day or two.
Replying to another question whether their seven MP-elects will take the oath, Dr Kamal said they will take the decision about it later.
However, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam said, “We’ve already rejected the election results and that’s enough.”
Sought his direct comment on the issue, the BNP leader said, “It’s clear that we’ve turned down the entire results.”
Earlier Dr Kamal said the country’s people witnessed a ‘drama’ in the name of parliamentary elections on Sunday.
“The Awami League and its subservient Chief Election Commissioner showed the country’s people and the entire world as to how the election system of an independent and sovereign country is destroyed,” he said.
Dr Kamal, the convener of Oikya Front, also said apparently Bangladesh and its 17 crore people got defeated in the ‘so-called’ election though Awami League-led government was shown victorious. “The much-sought democracy has been buried with it.”
Oikya Front senior leaders, including Mirza Fakhrul, JSD-Rob president ASM Abdur Rob, Gano Forum execute president Subrata Chowdhury, Gonoshasthya Kendra founder Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury and BNP vice-chairman Abdul Awal Mintoo, held a two-hour meeting chaired by Dr Kamal Hossain from 7 pm at his chamber.
Meeting sources said the Oikya Front leaders analysed the election results and worked out their next course of actions.
As part of the meeting decision, a Gano Forum leader said the alliance will submit the memorandum to the EC on January 3.
Besides, the alliance also decided to file a writ petition, led by Dr Kamal, with the High Court very soon seeking its directives for declaring Sunday’s election void. – UNB
