One killed, 19 hurt in Rangpur post-poll violence

A man was killed and atleast 19 others were injured in a clash on Saturday between the supporters of two defeated contestants who had run for councillor positions in the Rangpur City Corporation election .
The clash took place around 12pm at Kishamat Bishu village under Ward-31 of the city, police said.
Six of those injured were rushed to Rangpur Medical College Hospital in critical condition, while the rest were released after first aid.
The police used baton-charges to bring the situation under control.
Five , including Shamsul Alam who had lost the councillor election, were nabbed by the police for the mayhem.
Officer-in-charge of the Kotwali Police Station Altaf Hossain told bdnews24.com that the deceased, identified as Dalim ,succumbed to his injuries at the hospital around 5pm.
Assistant Police Superintendent (Circle-A) BM Zakir Hossain told bdnews24.com that the clash followed an altercation between two councillor aspirants — Belal Hossain and Shamsul Alam — after both blamed each other for the defeat in Thursday’s election to the newly constituted city corporation.
More policemen have been deployed at the site of the clash to avert further trouble.
