One killed in Barguna ‘gunfight’, 3 injured in Laxmipur

One Mozammel Huq was killed in a reported ‘gunfight’ with police at Amtali Upazila in Barguna district in the early hours of Saturday. Police said Amjad was the leader of a gang of dacoits. Five policemen were injured in the ‘gunfight’.
The ‘gunfight’ took place at Gulishkhali village under the upazila at about 2am on Friday night. Mozammel Huq hailed from Tikikata village of the same upazila.Police on information went to the abandoned home of Amjad pyada when dacoity was being committed at dead of night, and the ‘gunfight’ ensued. Mozammel Huq died of bullet injuries. Police caught six dacoits and recovered indigenous weapons, 6 cocktails and several gun cartridges, police said. The arrested persons are: Zahirul (35), Ansar (30), Nasir (25), Masum (25),Hanif (25) and Bacchu (35).
Meanwhile 3 suspected criminals have received bullet injuries in a “gunfight” with the police on Chondroganj-Chatkhali road under the Sadar upazila in Laxmipur.
The injured are Md Sahed, 24, son of Zafar of Amishpara union, Emon Hossain, 25, son of Abu Taher of the same area and Md Sohel, 24, son of Abul Khayer.
District Assistant Police Super Md Junayed Kauser said: “The criminals opened fire on the police at 2am on Friday, while the law enforcers were patrolling the area.”
“In retaliation, the police fired back, leaving three of the criminals injured.”
Four police members also sustained injuries during the “gunfight,” said Chondroganj OC Md Humayun Kabir.
The police also recovered a LG gun, a pipe gun and four bullets from the spot. The OC claimed that the injured persons were the members of Jishan Bahinin, a local terror group.
The leader of the group, Solaiman Uddin Jisan, also a former Chhatra Dal leader of Lakshmipur died in a gunfight with RAB on January 23.
Jisan, who was the former library secretary of Chhatra Dal’s Laxmipur unit, was expelled from his post back in 2004.
Lakshmipur police had reportedly announced bounty on information to secure Jisan’s arrest. – News Desk
