The import of onion, a key cooking ingredient, from neighbouring country Myanmar has started to ensure sufficient supply in the overheated market ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, said a Commerce Ministry official on Monday. “Yes, the import has started. It’s being done through the private sector,” Monoj Kumar Roy, additional secretary (import) of the Commerce Ministry said. Earlier on Sunday, the Commerce Ministry official held a meeting with the importers and leaders of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) in Chittagong to find out ways for keeping the market stable before Eid-ul-Azha and Puja. Meanwhile, the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) decided to import onions from two neighboring countries – India and Myanmar – in phases to stabilise the market. Onion price hit record high Tk 70-75 per kilogram on the back of a supply crunch in India. – UNB
