Org to help those serving long jail terms sans trial urged

Dhaka – Supreme Court Legal Aid Committee Chairman High Court Division Justice M Enayetur Rahim yesterday said that a specific law is needed to rehabilitate those people who were released from jail after long terms incarceration without any trial.“There is no law to rehabilitate those people who have been languishing in jail for long-time without any trial. A law should formulate to rehabilitate them so that they could be rehabilitated soon after getting release from jail,” Justice M Enayetur Rahim came up with the observation while addressing at a ‘Meet the Press’ ceremony organised by Supreme Court Legal Aid Committee at the Conference Lounge of the Supreme Court.
Supreme Court Registrar General Syed Aminul Islam, Supreme Court Bar Association secretary M Mahbub Uddin Khokan, High Court Registrar Syed Dilzar Hossain and Supreme Court Additional Registrar Sabbir Foyez were also addressed among others at the programme.
Justice Enayetur Rahim said that it would be easier for the government to rehabilitate them if a specific law is existed in the country.
He however, said that the government is thinking to compensate them in accordance with the Tort Act.
Following the media report, the legal aid committee took initiative for those people who were in jail for long time without any trial. After taking initiative, a number of accused people released from jail following the High Court order, Justice Rahim noted. – Staff Reporter
