Outlawed party leader injured, ‘terrorist’ killed in ‘shootouts’

A regional leader of the outlawed Purba Banglar Communist Party (ML) was shot and wounded in a ‘shootout’ between his cohorts and police at Kewa village in Pangsha uapzila early Tuesday.
The injured was identified as Kuddus Mandol, son of Bhajon Mandol, a resident of Khulumbari village in Shoilakupa upazila of Jhenidah district.
He was wanted in five cases, including of murder and arms, said police.
Officer-in-charge of Pangsha Police Station Abu Shama Mohammad Iqbal Hayat said a team of police arrested Kuddus from the upazila on Monday.

When the law enforcers took Kuddus to Kewa village for recovering arms, Kuddus’s cohorts opened fire on the law enforcers, forcing them to fire back which triggered a gunfight.
Kuddus received bullet wounds during the gunfight. Four policemen including two sub-inspectors were also injured during the gunfight. Later, he was admitted to Rajbari Sadar Hospital under police custody.
One shutter gun and four rounds of cartridge were recovered from the spot. A case was filed in this connection.
In another incident an alleged ‘terrorist’ was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Bagmara in the city on Tuesday night.
The deceased was identified as Al Mamun, 38, son of Abdul Jalil of Rampal upazila in Bagerhat district.
Tipped off, a team of Khulna Sadar Police Station launched a drive in Raipura area of the city around 1pm and arrested Mamun along with three pistols and one revolver, officer-in-charge of the police station Sukumar Bishwas said.
When the law enforcers took Mamun to Bagmara in the city around 8pm for recovering more arms, his cohorts opened fire on the law enforcers, forcing them to fire back which triggered a gunfight.
Mamun received bullet wounds during the gunfight. He was taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead around 8:30pm.
Police said he was involved in terrorist activities, robbery and arms trading. OC Sukumar Bishwas, ASIs Azim and Arun were also injured during the gunfight. One shutter gun and several rounds of bullets were recovered from the spot. – UNB
