Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Thursday said the 10th Parliament is an addition to the march for democracy in the country.
Talking to reporters after placing wreath at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mojibur Rahman at Dhanmondi Road No. 32, she also expressed her hope that the opposition Jatiya Party would play an important role to make Parliament effective one.The newly elected Speaker of the 10th Parliament said the January 5 election was held in accordance with constitution and legal procedures.
She said the composition of Ninth and 10th Parliaments is different.
“Our main task will be to play due role to fulfill the hopes and aspirations of the people. I expect that both the ruling and treasury benches will play their construction roles from their own positions,” she said.
Deputy Speaker Advocate Fazle Rabbi Miah said a new chapter has been created in the parliamentary history of the country.
Replying to a question, he said presence of BNP, the main political rival of the ruling Awami League, in Parliament is not important for the people and the democracy. “People expect that the country will go forward in future,” he added.
Chief whip ASM Firoz and whips—Atiur Rahman Atique, Shahiduzzaman Sarker, Iqbalur Rahim, Mohammad Shahabudidn and Solaiman Joarder, among others, were present on the occasion. – Staff Reporter
