PBI asks to re investigate new year sexual assaults

A court has ordered a reinvestigation of a series of sexual assaults on women at Dhaka University during Bengali New Year celebrations. Accepting a prosecution plea on Tuesday, Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal judge Jayasree Samaddar ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to re-probe the case. The probe into the incident had been forced to a conclusion when Shahbagh police failed to identify any of the culprits in their final report submitted in December last year.Detective Branch SI Dipok Kumar appealed to the court on Jan 21, seeking the reopening of the case following the arrest of a suspect, Md Kamal, from Dhaka’s Chawkbazar.

The PBI has been ordered to submit its report within March 23.“The investigation would not be proper if police does it. Another agency should be given charge,” said Mahmuda Akhter, special counsel for the prosecution.Several women, who had joined the celebrations at Dhaka University last year, were molested by a group of men in the crowd.Eight of the culprits had been spotted on CCTV camera footage, the police had said on May 17, and announced monetary reward for anyone providing information leading to their arrest.
