Prime Minister on Wednesday told Parliament that the people do not respond to the movement of some political parties as they have full support and confidence to her government that assumed power through January 5 general elections.
“Some political parties or personalities are repeatedly making threats, giving timeframe and even announcing movement to unseat the government but they do not get responses from people meaning that the people have full confidence and support to our government,” she said while replying to a supplementary question from ruling party lawmaker Khandaker Ali Ashraf.The Awami League chief asserted that the people also know that the AL would be able to carry forward the country since the party led by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman achieved the independence of the country through struggle and movement for 24 years taking the people with him.
She said whenever the AL came to power it worked for the wellbeing of the people and the nation since it had sacrificed a lot for the country and the nation and leaders and workers faced imprisonment and repression.
Hasina said her government believes that a proper direction and long-term planning only can carry a country forward and people’s support and confidence are a must for that. “Our government is going forward taking full support and confidence of the people,” she said.
The PM who is also the Leader of the House called upon the ministers and lawmakers to implement the ongoing development projects smoothly. She vowed that her government would work to strengthen the rural economy with a view to alleviating poverty.
Replying to another question from independent candidate Rustom Ali Farazi, the premier said the election of Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury as chairperson of Commonwealth Parliament Association (CPA) and lawmaker Saber Hossain Chowdhury as president of Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) was a great achievement for the country.
“Their election also ensured that the world community has total confidence to our continued advancement in establishing democracy, development and rule of law,” she said.
Hasina said their election to top posts of two international organisations also proved that Bangladesh is now being considered a Role Model in establishing democracy and rule of law.
She said the BNP failed to win the OIC secretary general post since it had chosen a war criminal as a candidate for the same. “Choosing candidate a major factor to achieve victory” she added. – Staff Reporter
