Petrol pump owners threaten strike

Convener of Bangladesh Petrol Pump Owners and Tank-Lorry Owners-Workers Unity Council Nazmul Haque said they had earlier asked the government to raise the rates of their commission by Jan 6 — by 3.4 percent on diesel and 4 percent on petrol and octane.“They (government) have not responded, that is why we are giving them further one week time before we start the strike,” Haque said.
He said their indefinite strike will start on Jan 20 if the authorities failed to response.
Leaders of the pump owners platform said they will fuel supply to 9,000 petrol pumps and tankers across the country when the strike starts.
On Jan 3, the government hiked prices of four fuel oils including petrol, diesel and octane by Tk 5 – 7 . The commissions of fuel distribution companies were also raised that day by Tk 0.02.
According to Nazmul Haque, the hike was causing an additional expenditure of Tk 63,000 per thousand litres of petrol, diesel and octane.
He said owners are currently receiving 2.45 percent commission per litre of diesel, 3.27 percent per litre for petrol and 3.30 percent for that of octane.
This, he said, was not enough.
