Plan taken to protect riverbank from Jamuna erosion

A mega plan has been taken up for development work aimed at protecting the right bank of the Jamuna, one of the mighty rivers in the country, from its erosion and flood stretching from Sirajganj to Kurigram districts.
Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) will implement the big volume work under Rehabilitation of Brahmaputra Right Embankment project involving at least Taka 2,500 crore while the World Bank would provide the fund.This was disclosed by executive engineer of BWDB here Rezaul Mostafa

Islam Rohel in the chair.A memorandum of understanding between Government of Bangladesh and World Bank had already been signed as a part of the official process and activities, he said adding that the tender of the work would be floated just after completing other formalities.Under the project, double lanes would also be built over the embankment to ease the communication system and hard material storages be set up at the side of the embankment to supply stone and rock to the vulnerable points from there to check the erosion during the emergency time, he added. In reply to a question, executive engineer said need basic information regarding the project was also being provided frequently to the authorities concerned from here to help start the development work smoothly.DC M Jahurul Islam Rohel in his speech assured the executive engineer of BWDB of giving his administrative help and assistance properly to implement the development work in a bid to protect the district from natural calamities-erosion and flood. -BSS, Gaibandha
