Players urged to step up in absence of Shakib Al Hasan

DHAKA—Bangladesh Test captain Mominul Haque urged other players to step up to plug the loopholes as his side’s balance was dented due to the absence of Shakib Al Hasan.

The ace all-rounder is in India now to play the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL) for Kolkata Knight Riders. Although his decision to choose IPL over the country is criticized heavily, Shakib said to prepare for the upcoming World T20, which will be also held in India, he chose IPL this time around ahead of national duty.

Mominul however had no statement over Shakib’s decision but he wants other players to take the more responsibility so that Bangladesh could keep the balance right.

At the same time, he believes Shakib’s absence is a chance for the player, who will replace him, to contribute for the team.

‘Shakib Bhai (Shakib Al Hasan) is the number one all-rounder in the world. He is an effective player for the team for any format of cricket,” Mominul said of Shakib.

“If he is not in the team, it is natural we will struggle with the combination. Of course we will miss him. But whoever is in the team, everyone has the ability to do well. It is a good opportunity for anyone, who will replace Shakib Bhai, to contribute to the team.”

Cricket experts said it is high time to launch a mission of finding the replacement of Shakib and other senior players who are believed to be on the verge of their career.

“Those who will come in his place, need to perform and show his mettle. We know it will be tough to fill the shoes of Shakib but at least if anyone can perform, it will give him immense confidence,” he added.BSS
