PM rules out declaration of emergency

Ruling out declaration of a state of emergency in the country, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday expressed her firm determination to overcome the situation by taking support from the people.
“One thing BNP forgets, while many people phone that emergency is going to be declared. But what is the necessity of proclamation of emergency. There are law enforcement agencies, and proper steps have already been taken to protect the life and property of the people,” she said.
“None could create any situation that warrants declaration of emergency in the country. As the people are with us, we must overcome the situation by taking action against the terrorists,” the PM added. The Prime Minister said this while replying to a question moved by Jatiya Party lawmaker Tazul Islam Chowdhury in the House during her question-answer session.
Highlighting the background of declaration of emergency after 1/11, the Leader of the House said Professor Iajuddin could declare state of emergency at that time as he was the executive head and the head of state.
“If declaration of the state of emergency is needed at present, the Prime Minister will have to write to the President. Then the President can proclaim the emergency,” she said.
Sheikh Hasina said: “We could establish the rule of law and control the law and order situation. We have taken proper steps to save life and property of the people,” she said.
The Prime Minister noted that there is no public support to the so-called movement of the BNP-Jamaat nexus. “As the people have no support to the movement, we would face the terrorists by taking the people with us,” she said.
The Prime Minister said there will no benefit from “miracle dreaming” of the state of emergency and staging talk shows. “We cannot put the country again on the unconstitutional path. The people don’t want it and they would resist if anybody wants it,” she said.
“Till we have the last drop of blood, we won’t allow the country to go to the path of destruction. It cannot be that the people of the whole country would suffer due to one or two terrorists or a few number of people,” she said.
Sheikh Hasina said the law enforcers remain alert against the criminals who are hurling petrol bombs and cocktails. “Many of such terrorists have already been arrested and stern action would be taken against the “hukumdata” (masterminds),” she said.
“We would find out those who provide money for the terrorist acts and directives have been given to control selling of petrol and gunpowder openly.
Even directives have been given to find out from where cocktails and the bottles using for petrol bombs come. We are not silent,” she said.
About the talk show participants, the Prime Minister said: “We don’t have anything to say about them. It is the habit of “talk showers” to speak sour. I would like to tell the opposition through honourable Speaker let you say about them,” she said.
She called upon all concerned to catch the saboteurs red handed for bringing them to book. – BSS
