Police have filed its chargesheet over the molestations of women during the Bangla New Year celebrations in Dhaka last year.Charges have been pressed against Md Kamal Hossain, who was arrested earlier this year, more than nine months after the incident.”The chargesheet names Kamal as our investigation suggest his involvement,” Police Investigation Bureau (PBI) chief Banaj Kumar Bhawmik told bdnews24.com.Amid the Pahela Baishakh celebrations on Apr 14 last year, a group of men molested some women several times at Suhrawardy Udyan’s main entrance, adjacent to the TSC at the Dhaka University.Four of the suspected culprits were allegedly caught and handed over to police, but they were later released.Police admitted to letting them off and blamed it on an officer, who was later removed from Shahbagh Police Station.Police were initially reluctant to investigate the allegations but protests by student bodies and civic groups and later a High Court order had forced them to act. Then, on May 17, police spotted eight of the suspects from CCTV footage and announced a Tk 100,000 reward for anyone providing information leading to their arrest.Eight months after the incident, the law enforcers filed a report in a Dhaka court in December last year, where it said they had not been able to track any of the offenders.Kamal, a vegetable vendor, was later arrested from Old Dhaka on Jan 27.Police claimed that he was one of the eight suspects, who had shaved off his beard to conceal his identity. The law enforcers then moved the court to revive the case.In February, a Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal granted its petition and ordered the PBI to investigate it. – source:bdnews24.com
