Policy on street children urged

Speakers at a function in the city on Thursday demanded preparation of a separate policy for street children to ensure their development.Leaders of Standing Committee on Social Protection of Street Children made the demand at a press conference titled “Some recommendations for street children” at the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity in the morning.
They observed that rehabilitation of 11 lakh street children would be possible if a separate policy for them is in place.
They said the state should take the responsibility of all children; otherwise national development in the real sense would not be possible.
The cmmittee members expressed the hope that the number of street children would reduce if the government takes necessary steps in line with the proposed policy on street children and implements the same.
They demanded of the government to take quick and effective measure for development of street children in line with the election pledge of the party in power.
Md Shahin Alam, now a class VII student, who was a street children before, read out a written statement at the press conference.
They informed that Standing Committee on Social Protection of Street Children under its Development Programme for the Street Children (DPSC) projects provides various serives to 85 male and 50 female street children at Gabtoli-Mirpur area.
The children are being given education opportunities in addition to their rehabilitation.
Rafiqul Bari and Md Moniruzzaman Mukul of Social and Economic Enhancement Programme (SEEP), a project of Social Protection of Street Children, truck worker Ibrahim Khalasi and Abdul Majid and street child Rehana, among others were present on the occasion.
